Distance from City: 26km

Day Trip Possible: No

Passenger Numbers: 2,000,000 (2008)

Closest Alternatives: Bodrum

Overview: Kos has been a popular tourist destination for several years now, with a huge influx of passengers in the summer months on charter flights from just about every major city in Europe. Outside of this, there are regular flights to London via Easyjet – but only a handful of other destinations. The only airport on the island, there is little alternatives to but to fly from here unless you fancy taking the ferry to Bodrum.

Getting there: The airport is situated quite west of the main city of Kos but may lie closer to the resorts (if you are staying at one). If you are flying out on Olympic Airlines, there is a shuttle bus which drops you off and picks up outside the terminal, otherwise you can catch a KTEL bus from just outside the airport. Taxis are plentiful and may cost around 30 EUR for the trip which will otherwise take around 30-4o minutes. Car hire is also available at the airport.

General Tips: Kos is not a majorly large airport; there are probably bigger airports taking half the amount of passengers. This is reflected in the size of the shops – a wider selection of duty free is probably available before you get here. Do be warned that if travelling in summer season, the airport will be extremely busy, with queues likely to be incredibly long – as most people will have checked luggage. Additionally, this will make the departures area very cramped indeed. If you do travel at this time do expect the worst, or try and visit earlier. Waiting around is pretty unpleasant at these time s though, the airport will be hot and crowded. Bring water, you will need it.

Budget Travellers Guide: Large amounts of flights during the summer means that it often is possible to get a good deal from the charters (packaged together with accomodation) and the Island of Kos is large enough to provide a getaway that caters for most interests. Outside of the peak season there are very few connections; however, with a cheap bus service and great weather almost all year around it is certainly worth investigating. Note that Ryanair do not fly here from the UK, the only connections from here are Milan-Bergamo and Frankfurt-Hahn.

Need a pre-paid card to dodge Ryanair fees? We’ve teamed up with FairFX to offer you their anywhere card – get one for FREE (usually £9.95 for loading under £500). Any currency – anywhere – it’s ideal for everyone.
