What airports to Ryanair fly to in Switzerland?

by admin on June 16, 2010

The short answer is that for the moment (2010) none: the last airport (Basel) was closed in 2009 – http://www.ryanair.com/en/news/ryanair-to-close-six-basel-routes. The official line of course was that charges were too high, but low booking figures could also be a reason. With a high amount of tourism from skiing, this type of customer doesn’t fit in well with Ryanair’s charges, as often they would require big, bulky checked luggage which attracts large fees. Although Ryanair tried to remedy this with the addition of free baggage allowances, it seems that others had a good advantage on them here.

It’s doubtful whether Ryanair will ever be back; Switzerland is a country that isn’t the best for low-cost airlines owing to high charges, with Zurich pricing out most would be carriers here, even from the closest countries. Which leaves Basel as the countries main LCC destination and this is served by Easyjet, and it’s franchise, Easyjet Switzerland.

The closest airports otherwise; some will be better than others depending on your destination.

1) Strasbourg
2) Stuttgart
3) Karlsruhe
4) Milan Bergamo
5) Verona (Brescia)
6) Lyon
7) Grenoble
8) Torino
