Overview: An airport positioned in a prime tourist area, Faro serves mainly for this reason and huge passenger numbers have resulted in it becoming the second largest airport in Portugal after Lisbon. As such, there is a huge disparity in passenger numbers between the summer and winter months, with an incredible number of charters operating here. However, there are all-round flights thanks to the generous climate, which ensures a steady stream of tourists all year around. The main terminal is new and modern, and full-service and low-costs housed under one roof allowing for a good service.

Getting there: Ideally located by road, should you have your own transport – rent a car is particularly popular here, given that resort transfers are an area where operators can make a bit more cash. There is also a large taxi stand at the airport – taxis to Faro would be cheap, but not to the resorts. The most economical option is the bus, which serves the airport and also main station in Faro. There is no train connection at the airport.

General Tips: The terminal is relatively spacious, although this may depend on the time of year you are arriving. Marbled floors and vast open spaces help to keep the atmosphere pretty cool inside although there is no real requirement to spend a lot of time here due to the closeness to the town. There are a load of places to purchase refreshments, and prices vary from expensive to rip-offs. There is a nice terrace bar which is excellent during the summer months as there’s lots to look at. If renting a car do make sure the desks are actually staffed when you arrive.

Budget Travellers Guide: Sometimes featured in the sales, Faro is often a good choice for a budget, because of the closeness to the city. There is (and used to be greater) overlap between Ryanair and Easyjet here, and the competition kept prices low. Connections remain excellent, especially to the UK, but most other European cities as well, although you will find many are seasonal. Other budgets operating here include Flybe, Air Berlin, BMIBaby, Germanwings, Jet2, and Transavia.
