Ryanair Airport Guide – Bologna Airport

by admin on December 29, 2009

Full Name: Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport

IATA Code: BLQ

Address: Via Triumvirato, 84 – 40132 Bologna (BO) – Italy

Terminal Plan: Here

Distance from city: 6km

Day Trip Possible: Yes

Passenger Numbers: 4,800,000 (2009)

Closest Alternative: Parma, Verona

Overview: Bologna is an airport that has been slowly growing over the years and now handles almost 5m passengers a year. No doubt the design of the airport has helped this; good facilities taking into account its size and a prudent expansion plan have seen this in good stead. As a result, many flag carriers fly here and the range of destinations is good. Ryanair have a good range here, with most of the major bases being served. Internal flights have also proved popular but the future of these in under threat.

Getting there: With only 6km between the airport and the city, getting to the airport is not difficult. There is a bus service running directly from the central train station which will take around 15 minutes to reach the airport. Additionally at the airport you can take buses to Siena or Modena. Milan is not that much further off although it’s probably best to take the train if you want to reach there from here. Taxis and car hire are also available at the airport.

General tips: There are no airwalks, so even flying BA will involve getting down with the best of them on the bus if you are unlucky. This also means that priority boarding is somewhat hit and miss here and not guaranteed to get you on the plane first. Do notice the rather efficient design of the airport – built on three levels, with most of the cafe/restaurants on the top deck with arrivals on the bottom. There are a good range of shops but in common with a few airports (I’m thinking of Hahn), much of the good stuff is actually before security, so bear this in mind if you’re wanting to shop.

Budget Travellers Guide: A good destination owing to the cheap onward transfers. Internal Italian flights are also cheap but have an uncertain future. There are good connections to plenty of other Ryanair destinations and Bologna is not that badly placed should you be wanting to take in more than one Italian city.
