Overview: An unlikely setting for an airport, Billund serves over 2 million passengers a year, but the actual town of Billund only has 8700 people. Nevertheless, it has become a popular destination for low-cost airlines and some legacy airlines too. With Legoland being one of the main attractions here, traffic is fairly seasonal but many Ryanair flights run all year round, aiming to take advantage of the airport’s central location in the surrounding areas.
A rare scenario is found here in that you may be able to see heavy jets such as the 747 here; Billund’s success was primarily due to cargo, with the airport being a convienient stopping point.
Getting there: There are no trains, but there are buses running to the towns of Aarhus and Vejle. Buses to Billund are also to be found which leave regularly. Be prepared to pay slightly higher prices than standard European prices - I’ve found it more expensive, especially in Scandinavia. As usual there are taxis and car hire services.
General Tips: The new terminal opened in 2002, and is definately one of the better ones out there, being well designed, airy and clean. Well thought out, and in some places provides a good view of the runway, offering a chance to kill some time. There are several shops and cafes in a good atmosphere but again, watch the prices as things can get expensive. Do check the bus times if you are commuting here by bus, especially in the middle of the day. In general there should be few problems here, with no long walks to anywhere.
Budget Travellers Guide: Surprisingly Billund often features in the sales and you will be able to achieve a same day turnaround – perfect if you’re wanting to visit the Lego Factory or similar. And as a bonus, connections from here are great. Other budget airlines from here include Air Baltic (to Riga), Cimber Sterling (Bergen, Bornholm [seasonal], Copenhagen, London-Gatwick, Malaga, Munich, Nice, Oslo, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Rome-Fiumicino, Stockholm-Arlanda) as well as KLM (Amsterdam) and Lufthansa (Frankfurt). There is a great range of destinations to choose from here.
