Overview: Set in a nice location on the west coast of Italy, Ancona is in a fair position to achieve some growth over the coming years. Previously a marginal regional airport, it had a new terminal built (not in pic) but the old building has remained directly next to it. The new terminal is very modern, a nice glass-fronted affair which makes things extremely nice inside. Quite rarely for an airport of this size, it also features a connected railway station, which is a nice touch.
Getting there: As mentioned, the railway station is your best bet. It is not on the national rail network but a short journey to Ancona for around 1.50 Euros will allow you to reach the rest of the country. There is also a bus service which is around the same price but takes slightly longer. Both services are pretty infrequent but should be convienient for landings and departures. If you so wish, there are the usual taxi and car hire stands.
General tips: A very pleasant airport; there is actually quite a lot of space owing to the design. There are the usual shops, duty free and a bar with the bonus of a wine shop also selling local meat and cheeses (very expensive though). There is ample space at the gates and, not really being a charter destination, traffic will remain pretty constant all year around.
Budget Travellers Guide: A good place thanks to the cheap onward transport connections. There are no day trips from Stansted available although with Ryanair’s expansion in Italy, this might change. Other destinations include Weeze, Alghero and Brussels, with the Alghero flight being particularly good value. No other destinations in the UK available as yet, with London the only seemingly viable one at present.
There is a frequent shuttle service by Alitalia to Rome which is on codeshare with several airlines, particularly useful if you have the frequent flier miles.
