Overview: Wroclaw is a modern airport in that it’s less than 20 years old although it already is pretty dated inside. Perhaps a victim of it’s own success, it’s undergone numerous expansions to accomodate an increasing number of passengers. At roughly 1.4 million for the last year, this is arguably more than is comfortable for the size of airport and hence a brand new terminal will be constructed for the purpose of accomodating up to 7 million passengers. Whether it gets this far is unknown but owing to the location and proximity of the airport to the town, the potential is there. Wroclaw is relatively under-utilised by the budgets at the moment with Ryanair dominating flights here.

Getting there: The easiest way is by bus; which leaves approximately every half an hour which takes you to Central station. There is also a night bus service, which you’re only likely to need if your flight is very early. Because Poland outside the EU exchange rates, taxis and car rentals are on slightly more favourable terms. In practice, taxis do not mind accepting Euros either. Transit times from the airport to town vary with traffic.

General tips: As mentioned before, the number of travellers is quite large for an airport of this size, and you can expect this to get quite busy. There are a couple of times in the day where flight times are cramped together and the end result being hundreds of people requiring the same facilities at the same time. Having said that, this is no worse than what you would expect at Stansted. You may read signs for Terminal ‘A’ or Terminal ‘B’ but in reality these are the same thing; virtually the same building used to sepearte domestic/international passengers.

Budget Travellers Guide: Day tripping is possible from London Stansted and the flights usually appear on the ‘cheap list’. Furthermore, there are also good connections on Ryanair to some of the major hubs (Girona, Frankfurt-Hahn, Stockholm) as well as interesting destinations such as Charleroi and Alicante. As you might expect, there are good German connections here with several cities well catered for as well as a host of domestic flights, the main one being to Warsaw, the capital. It’s a good place for a bit of budget travelling; things are slightly cheaper, although not incredibly so. Most of the attractions are free; some fascinating architecture in a city brimming with history.
