Ryanair Airport Guide – Zadar Airport

by admin on July 31, 2009

Full Name: Zadar Airport

IATA Code: ZAD

Address:  PO Box 367 23000 Zadar, Croatia

Terminal Plan: Here

Distance from City: 8km

Day Trip Possible: No

Overview: Despite only seeing traffic of around 150,000 passengers per annum, Zadar is a nice, airy, modern airport. One of only two Ryanair airports in Croatia – it’s only served by a handful of destinations with some clear room for expansion to other destinations. As currently Croatia resides outside the EU, there are quite a few advantages, especially when it comes to duty free.

Getting there: Via public transport, there is only one way, by bus. There is a regular bus service that runs from the central Zadar bus station. This only coincides with flight times so there may be very few buses in the day. If you do happen to miss it, your only option is to take a taxi. The good news is, that it is quite a short distance and is not too costly. There are the obligatory car hire and taxi stands in the airport.

General tips: The scarcity of the flights at the airport (there may only be five for the whole day) means that you don’t really have a choice in hanging around here; once you land, you had better make sure you don’t miss the allotted bus, as there may not be another one for a few hours. The bus on the way back does not allot you too much time – perhaps over an hour but the airport is hassle free and you should clear queues really quickly. Shopping-wise, it makes sense to check out the duty-free – as it’s outside the EU, there will be some signifcant savings on products such as alcohol and tobacco. There is plenty of seating around, and quite rarely for an airport, the seats are comfy. For such a small airport, this is one of the most modern, and we can only hope that more routes appear.

Budget Travellers Guide: Croatia can be cheap outside the tourist hotspots and transit to and from the airport is reasonable. The real problem is frequency of flights; there are no daily services, it would appear, meaning you could route yourself back through somewhere else such as Hahn. Other budget operators GermanWings and Sky Europe operate from here too, and also charter services in summer if you would wish to persue other connections.
