Overview: One of the harder airports to reach, only being available through FR via Marseille; however, there are many low-costs servicing this airport including EasyJet (starting later), Aer Lingus, and also charter airlines Thomas Cook, Thomson and TUI. The UK is well serviced here, with flights to Gatwick, Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands and Manchester. Perhaps there would be scope for a Stansted service, but this would be a more riskier gamble than most considering the long flying times here. A former military base, the airport has seen some improvements but not by much; passenger numbers have remained stagnant here for the last few years. With the airport heavily reliant on the committed tourist trade (ie. those who have booked package holidays), there is not much prospect for growth in this economic climate.
Getting there: There are no scheduled coach services – most tourists arriving with the package operators will have their own transfers arranged. Getting to Agadir requires two buses – changing at Inzegane. Bus fares are pretty cheap – about 30p each sector. Taxis at the airport are expensive for Moroccan standards; if you are on your own it is better to try and find someone to share with to reduce the cost. As you probably could guess, there is no rail connections. Car hire is available at the airport.
General tips: It’s a small-ish airport which claims to have capacity of double it’s current rate although I wouldn’t like to see that. Can be busy at peak times with very small waiting areas at the gates and security. There is no real need for arriving mega early as there is not too much to do although the settings are very pleasant. Local currency is discouraged inside the airport – a remit to charge Western prices in Western currencies.
Budget Travellers Guide: Difficult to reach on a budget, although this may change with EasyJet, although local prices may make up for this. Rather amusingly the airport website also recommends sleeping in the airport, which actually is not too difficult in warmer climates, and also as the luggage scans are done on arrival to the airport, undesirables are kept out. Make sure you do your shopping beforehand though as the shops can be expensive here. And last of all – remember that it’s outside the EU and therefore your duty-free allowances will be different.
