Overview: Suprisingly on arrival, this is not an airport where Ryanair flights dominate; there being only a handful of destinations from here with only London appearing to be regularly serviced. Aarhus appears to be a hub in Denmark with the majority of flights operating to Kobenhavn. Interestingly British Airways also operate here although it appears to be a subsidary who have taken on the BA branding. Clearly, you would think that Ryanair could make a real challenge for the Aarhus-Kobenhavn route although one suspects there may be more high-up reasons as to why it hasn’t happened as yet. With new routes planned for the future, I wouldn’t be surprised to see an aircraft based here soon.
Getting there: At about 30km, the journey to Aarhus isn’t too bad. There are buses timed to meet the aircraft on arrival, and it takes about 40 minutes to town, costing around £10 one way. There are also normal buses going to the smaller, closer towns of Randers and Ebeltoft from outside the airport. The obligatory car hire and taxi services are located at the airport as well; although due to the distance a taxi isn’t the most economical option. No train option at this place.
General tips: Aarhus is a relatively small airport but the lack of flights going out mean that it’s mostly quiet and things are well-organised. There are a few shops and places to eat but not a massive choice, but pretty acceptable; also there are other facilities such as a bank and travel agents if you’re arriving. No real issues with security here although you should note that Ryanair flights can be the largest (by volume) this airport can take; if this flight is full, there will be standing around.
Budget Travellers Guide: It’s possible to day trip here from London-Stansted; a good combo of the early morning flight and the late evening flight. Flights are usually cheap on this route and never that busy; not surprising really considering no-one really mentions Aarhus as a major tourist destination. That doesn’t mean it’s not good though; it’s a very pretty place with a good combination of the sea and the town; perhaps the Danish version of somewhere like Hastings. You may want to consider the coach charges when travelling here; the £20 return is more than likely to be double the cost of the airfare.
